FIGMA-AI?

Figma is unveiling a host of new features at its Config conference, headlined by a significant UI overhaul, innovative generative AI tools aimed at simplifying project creation, and integrated slideshow capabilities.

Starting with the redesign, described as laying the groundwork for the next decade in a recent blog post, users can expect a refreshed interface featuring elements like a new toolbar, rounded corners, and an array of 200 new icons. This redesign aims to shift the focus away from the UI itself and towards the users' work, fostering an accessible environment for newcomers while retaining utility for seasoned Figma professionals.

Figma has introduced its third major redesign since the platform's closed beta launch, rolling out initially in a limited beta with a waitlist available for interested users.

Alongside the redesign, the standout feature is the addition of new generative AI tools designed to streamline the design process. These tools resemble familiar "draft an email"-type AI applications but are tailored specifically for Figma. During a briefing, Figma's chief product officer Yuhki Yamashita demonstrated how these tools can rapidly generate designs. For instance, when prompted with a request for an app design for a new restaurant, Figma quickly produced a mock-up complete with menu listings, a tab bar, and integration buttons for delivery services like Uber Eats and DoorDash. While the initial output resembled a generic mobile app mock-up, Yamashita was able to immediately begin refining and customizing it.

In another demonstration, Yamashita requested Figma AI to generate a design for a recipe page featuring chocolate chip cookies. True to its capabilities, Figma not only created the layout but also generated an AI-generated image of a chocolate chip cookie. Although the cookie image appeared realistic over Zoom, it's noted that creating basic images like these is generally within the capabilities of AI generators.

Figma AI is set to debut in a limited beta starting this Wednesday, with interested users encouraged to join the waitlist. This beta phase is scheduled to continue through the end of the year. During the beta period, Figma's AI tools will be available free of charge, although the company has indicated the possibility of implementing "usage limits." Figma has assured users that clear pricing details will be provided once the AI features are officially launched.
